My late husband Joe Berger Jr. and his dad Joe Berger Sr. had always been heavily involved in promoting our community, drawing additional businesses and people here, and helping them make Fond du Lac their home. They knew if people came here, they would want and need educational resources, so they lobbied hard to bring a UW Campus to the community's doorstep. They literally "camped out" on the Capitol steps, sharing their dream for a UW-Fond du Lac campus with legislators...and a dream became reality. In honor of their efforts, I posthumously keep the Berger name alive on campus through the "Berger Book Bag Grants"! This program, administered by the UW-FDL Foundation, provides monies for books, supplies and fees for students in need. While not a loan, the grant comes with a message, which I personally deliver to the students, about paying it forward in their own lives. I have had the privilege to meet many of the recipients and offer friendly support throughout their college years. I have truly received far more than what I have given!
